Confidentiality is an important aspect of counseling. Our primary goal is to provide you with a safe environment in which you feel comfortable to discuss your concerns. Your medical information is private and will only be shared with others if you give permission. Counseling and Mental Health Services will not share your medical information with parents, faculty, or deans without your consent. Your written HIPAA compliant authorization is required for communication between the University and Student Health Services on any issue regarding your mental health.
Please refer to the HIPAA Privacy Notice provided by the Student Health Service for specific information regarding HIPAA compliant authorizations. All psychotherapy notes are defined by federal law as those notes of a mental health provider documenting or analyzing conversations during a private counseling session or a group counseling session and that are kept separated from the rest of the medical record. The patient files from these interactions are confidential.
