Student Health Service (SHS) Wellness Counseling staff provides confidential services to full-time enrolled medical campus students (Med, MSTP, PACs, OT, PT DBBS, Clinical Master Research) programs:
Our professional staff members work with students to resolve personal and interpersonal difficulties, many of which can affect a student’s academic experience. These include conflicts with or worry about friends or family, concerns about eating or drinking patterns, and feelings of anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Individual, Conjoint, and Group therapy are all provided in addition to referrals for off-campus support.

Specialties include: treatment of mood disorders, stress, anxiety, trauma, racial identity issues, interpersonal difficulties, body image concerns, self-esteem challenges, and perfectionism.
Treatment modalities: A variety of evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, Behavioral Activation, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Specialties include: Anxiety, depression, grief, substance abuse, and trauma of all types. I have advanced training in sexual trauma, race based trauma and general trauma. Chronic illness and pain are also and area I’ve done extensive work with. Couples and relationship counseling to include the impact of dysfunctional family systems are also areas I have work with intensely.
Treatment modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Therapy and CBT (TF-CBT), Dialectial Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Somatic Resourcing, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma and anxiety, and Solution Focused Therapy with clients and lastly 12 step facilitation for addiction and abuse. also Mindful Based Stress Reduction and Meditation.

Dr. Kenton Lee Wertman is a clinical psychologist who has worked with Washington University School of Medicine students for over 25 years. Given his training in behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic modalities, Dr. Wertman brings a number of skills and competencies to treat the suffering of his patients. He has worked extensively with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, life transition issues, loss and compulsive behaviors, including sexual compulsions. He has always served a diverse population, including the LGBT community. Addressing the whole person, and not just the symptoms, is his approach to therapy whether it is a short-term or long-term treatment.
