Student Health Services maintains a small on-site dispensary for prescription medication. For medications received from the Student Health Services on-site prescription medication dispensary, students will be responsible for 20% co-insurance, depending on the type of medication and cost. When requesting a refill from a student health provider, you may call or email Student Health Services to ensure that a medication is stocked. Requests for refills may be emailed to StudentHealthService@wusm.wustl.edu or called in at (314) 362-3523, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Please provide your preferred retail pharmacy name, phone number, and address. Allow two hours for refilling. If, at any time, a student is unable to pick up medication during normal business hours, they may request that the medication be placed in the after-hours lock box outside the door of Student Health Service.
Payment is taken at time of service at the reception desk. Student Health accepts cash, check, or credit (Visa, MasterCard, Discover).

Students and Covered Dependents may also obtain prescriptions at an preferred retail pharmacy with your WashU Medicine Student Health administered by Anthem pharmacy benefits. For Anthem pharmacy benefits call Pharmacy Member Services: 1-833-267-2133
Medications Costing Over $250 per month:
Specialty medications with a monthly cost greater than $250 are not covered under the WashU Medicine Student Health pharmacy benefit administered by Anthem. These medications are considered non-covered medications and are therefore not eligible for prior authorization review.
Students prescribed these medications are encouraged to apply for a Patient Assistance Program (PAP). Many pharmaceutical manufacturers and nonprofit foundations offer programs that may help reduce or cover medication costs based on financial eligibility.
Helpful resources include:
- RxAssist Patient Assistance Programs — provides application forms, eligibility information, and contact details for many assistance programs.
- Your provider’s office may also be able to help identify and complete appropriate applications.
Eligibility requirements vary by program and are often based on income.
Our goal is not to create barriers to care, but to help students access effective treatment while minimizing out-of-pocket expenses and maintaining low or zero copays whenever possible. We understand that navigating medication coverage can be stressful, and Student Health Services is committed to working closely with you and your provider throughout the process.
To help avoid delays in treatment, please notify Student Health once you have submitted a patient assistance application so we can help monitor the process.
If your PAP application is denied, contact Student Health Services promptly. We may be able to help identify alternative treatment options or temporary cost-saving solutions to prevent interruptions in care. For example:
- Discount programs such as GoodRx may help reduce out-of-pocket costs while appeals or assistance applications are pending. In some temporary situations, Student Health may assist with medications near the $250 monthly cap, with the student responsible for 20% of the cost.
Staying connected is essential to ensuring timely care. Clear communication between students, providers, and Student Health Services helps us support you as efficiently as possible.

Requesting a medication refill
Student Health has two methods for requesting a refill of a prescription:
Via email, student should:
-
- Go to their school email account
- Email to: StudentHealthService@wusm.wustl.edu
- Subject line: [secure] Prescription (Rx) Refill Requests
- Type medication name and # of days or supply requested.
- retail pharmacy name, phone number and address
- Request: pick-up or place in the after hour safe. The after-hour safe is available for those who have conflicts with normal business hours.
- Program: Medical, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, DBBS, MSIBS, PACs, Master of Population
Students can also call the SHS office:
-
- During normal business hours Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm call 314-362-3523
- Medication emails will be checked every hour
- The student will be contacted in case of discrepancies.
- For medications placed in the after-hours safe, payment will be required prior to placement.
- For medication pick up, payment will be required at that time.
The preferred and most convenient method for most students is requesting a refill by email. No matter which method the student uses, they will need to provide specific information to complete the request. Students can assume that their refill is being processed and will be available for pick-up next business day after the request is received. Please remember that the medication dispensary is closed on weekends and holidays and you will not receive communication regarding your request unless we have a question.
If, at any time, a student is unable to pick up medication during normal business hours, they may request that the medication be placed in the after-hours lock box outside the door of Student Health Service.
Travel abroad medication
Student Health Services will provide recommended medications when traveling. Student Health Services will cover 20% of the cost of such medications and students are responsible for the remaining cost. If a program is sponsoring the travel, the student’s medication expenses may be able to be added to the grant or travel budget. Contact the program’s coordinator for more information.
