Survivors have the right to:
- Receive medical care, mental health treatment and/or participate in legal procedures only after giving informed consent.
- Refuse to answer questions about prior sexual experiences.
- Keep their name from the media.
- Be protected against future assaults.
- Decide against a report to the police.
- Be given as much credibility as a victim of any other crime.
Survivors have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.
Filing a report
Washington University in St. Louis encourages students to file a police report and/or a report with the Title IX Coordinator about the incident. This report will be treated with courtesy, sensitivity, dignity, understanding and professionalism. Calls should be directed to the Washington University Security Department at (314) 362-4357, and the Title IX Coordinator at (314) 935-3118.
Anonymous reporting
If a student chooses not to file a report with the police, the university has an anonymous reporting mechanism that is also encouraged. Students can file an anonymous and confidential report, which allows university officials to be aware of the incident and to proactively provide more safety measures, education and support. If the student would prefer to speak with someone instead of of filing the report, they may confidentially discuss the experience and the options.

All students have the right and are encouraged to file a formal complaint in the event of sexual harassment, which includes sexual violence, experienced as a student. As the Title IX Coordinator, Jessica Kennedy is dedicated to ensuring campus safety by proactively addressing all complaints. Jessica can meet with students individually to hear their complaints or refer to an appropriate campus resource. A report to the Title IX Coordinator does not preclude a victim’s right to file a report with the police and seek criminal prosecution if they are a victim of rape, sexual assault or other sexual offenses.
